The Unlikely Lads share some Festive Cheer

The Unlikely Lads featured on STV News ahead of their annual Christmas Singalong

Our inimitable Unlikely Lads delivered the Christmas Spirit at their festive singalong for 2025! At this time of year, when many face loneliness, they continue to remind us of the power of community.

Many of the Lads have faced bereavement, isolation, or health challenges over the years. Yet every week they show up for one another in a support network that extends far beyond rehearsals. Their appearance on STV News this week highlighted the benefits of being part of the choir to their physical, social, and mental health - proof that community matters.

Andrew and John from the choir shared with STV's Laura Boyd, what led them to CentreStage and the impact it's had on their wellbeing. For Andrew, it's been a welcome escape from worrying about his wife's battle with Alzheimer's. And for John, the camaraderie he's found with the other Lads has been instrumental while grieving the loss of his wife and sister.

On a high note, it's been another incredible year for the Lads. Another year of friendship, laughter, and the joy of being part of something. And for many of them, that sense of belonging has changed everything.

September's Volunteer Beyond Award Winners

Congratulations to Anne and Rod!

We were delighted to celebrate Anne and Rod, September’s Volunteer Beyond Award recipients!

Anne and Rod lead our Adult Actors group on a voluntary basis, allowing it to run at no cost to attend for participants. The group has grown significantly over the past year, and that’s thanks to the welcoming space they have created where each participant feels valued, supported and inspired to fulfil their potential both on and off stage. Together, they bring out the absolute best of every participant.

As one of our most diverse performance groups, featuring everyone from first timers to those with additional needs, neurodiversity, or low self-esteem. It's thanks to this diversity that the stage becomes a playground of possibility.

September’s production of Hi-de-Hi was a perfect example. Through months of rehearsals, they brought together a cast of adults with diverse experiences and abilities and paved a journey of laughter and confidence-building.

After the show, 80% of participants agreed that by participating in the arts, they've been able to tackle challenges in other areas of life. One person shared, "I was housebound with anxiety before, but by coming along I've vastly improved my confidence and am able to see my potential for other things."

Thank you to Anne and Rod for their commitment and dedication to bringing out the best in others.

People, Possibility, and the Power of the Arts

October’s ‘Reel Songs’ brought the auditorium to life as our Chicks@6, RockItMen, and the inimitable Unlikely Lads took to the spotlight to celebrate the power of our community and connection.

This show was a reflection of everything that becomes possible when people are given the opportunity to feel part of something. It united 45 participants, aged from 18 to 88. Among them were families performing side by side, carers and loved ones, those who are neurodiverse or with additional support needs thriving without judgement. Each person came together, not through circumstance, but through the shared joy of the arts.

Thanks to the continued support of our community, partners, and funders, every one of these groups is completely free to attend. We know that poverty is about more than income, and loneliness is about more than relationships. It’s about opportunity, chances, aspiration, and the right to be seen, valued and supported. Removing financial barriers allows people to feel included, and to rediscover the confidence that can transform their lives.

The impact speaks for itself:

- 98% of participants reported feeling more confident and included

- 98% said their mental health had improved

- 79% shared that being part of CentreStage has helped them tackle challenges in other areas of life

These numbers represent lives transformed through creativity and connection. Behind every statistic is a story of someone who’s found their voice, accessed a service they didn’t know existed, or formed a friendship that’s changed their outlook.

These outcomes are a result of placing people and potential at the heart of the CentreStage model. Access to creativity and connection is not a luxury, but a fundamental driver of wellbeing an community growth.

At the heart of CentreStage lies a commitment to ensuring that the benefits of participating in the arts is shared by all. Our activities and partnerships are enabling people to develop skills and relationships that ripple far beyond the CentreStage Village. With 30+ co-located partners, from financial advice to childcare and mental health support, we know that real change begins with people - people who feel seen, supported, and part of something greater than themselves.

None of it would be possible without the belief and generosity of our supporters, participants, volunteers, and audiences. They make it possible for people of all ages and backgrounds to access the arts, not as a privilege but a right. By investing in organisations like ours, together we’re building the wellbeing, confidence, and resilience that help communities thrive.

Reel Songs was a celebration of that collective spirit and all that’s possible by coming together to paint a picture where people are not defined by circumstance, but by possibility.

Congratulating Our Neighbours at Beautiful Inside & Out

Pauline at Beautiful Inside & Out Wins 'Make a Difference' Award

A huge congratulations to our Neighbour, Pauline Moriarty, Founder of Beautiful Inside & Out, who won the Fundraiser Award at 2025's Make a Difference Awards by BBC Radio Scotland.

Pauline and her team of counsellors and therapists, some based at CentreStage, work tirelessly to support troubled individuals and bereaved parents and siblings affected by suicide. All in memory of Pauline's daughter Jenna, who died aged just 13, the charity also delivers awareness-raising talks to schools, universities, and workplaces across the country.

Pauline said she felt overwhelmed to be nominated, and even more so to win the award.

"I look on this award as recognising the importance of the work of all of our wonderful volunteers who help raise funds for our services through our charity shop, craft Fayres and events, as well as our invaluable therapists and counsellors who work directly to improving and saving lives. This award enabled us to further raise awareness, which has led to more and more people reaching out to us for support. In this way, receiving this award may indeed save more lives."

Over the last eleven years, Beautiful Inside & Out has evolved in many ways and now offers a range of counselling services and therapies, including sound and music, play, equine, and art.

At CentreStage, we are incredibly proud to support this organisation. The charity has transformed two of the rooms in our Neighbourhood into sanctuaries of support. Here, counsellors and therapists deliver tailored sessions to help people put their best foot forward. It is a privilege to enable and be part of this.

CentreStage Turns Pink & Blue for Baby Loss Support

We Showed our Support this Baby Loss Awareness Month

October 9th-15th is Baby Loss Awareness Week, and we were proud to show our support to our friends at Ayrshire Baby Loss Support by lighting out clock pink and blue, the charity's colours.

Ayrshire Baby Loss Support works tirelessly to raise awareness and support bereaved parents across Ayrshire, who so often face loneliness and isolation after the loss of a baby.

It was great to join so many other landmarks organisations like the Kelpies, Kilmarnock Viaduct, HALO, and others across Scotland in spreading awareness of this incredible charity and the work they do.

Our Community's Fight Against Poverty

This week is Challenge Poverty Week, a time to reflect on what poverty really means and what it looks like in our communities. For many, poverty is defined by financial struggles – putting food on the table, paying the bills, or keeping warm in the winter. These are real and pressing issues, but here at CentreStage, we also see another side of poverty. It’s not just about what people don’t have, it’s about what they lose along the way: connection, aspiration, and the sense of belonging that gives life meaning.

When we took on the former Kilmarnock Academy, our goal wasn’t to expand what we had at James Little Street, but to build a place where labels are left at the door, and people can walk in knowing they will be welcomed exactly as they are. We don’t provide a service; we provide the support and tools for people to find what they need. Every cup of coffee enjoyed in our café, every ticket to a show, every class someone attends helps sustain that approach. These moments of connection and vulnerability help us reach people in ways that traditional support systems often can’t.

The CentreStage Village is now at current capacity and home to more than 25 organisations, all working together to strengthen our community. Our neighbours play a vital role. CHAP provides free and confidential advice on housing, debt and welfare rights, giving people the security they need to move forward. Flexible Childcare Services Scotland gives parents the opportunity to work or study knowing their children are cared for. Beautiful Inside & Out provides a lifeline for young people, helping them to find confidence and self-worth. MCR Pathways extends the privilege of aspiration to young people of all backgrounds. Barclays Local helps people stay connected and build digital and financial skills for the future.

By bringing all of this under one roof, we make it easier for people to find what they need, when they need it. Someone might arrive for a bite to eat and leave with support for a housing issue, a new friend, or a sense of direction. It’s this kind of connection that helps people rediscover their strengths and potential.

At CentreStage, we believe tackling poverty is about more than meeting immediate needs. It’s about unlocking opportunities. It’s about giving people the chance to feel part of something bigger, to learn, to share, and to dream again. We see every day how the arts can lift people out of isolation, build self-belief and spark new beginnings.

Challenge Poverty Week is a reminder that poverty is not just about money. It’s about people. When we invest in communities that bring people together, we create the conditions for change that lasts. At CentreStage, we’re proud to be part of that change. Because when people have a place to belong, they start to believe in themselves again.

Celebrating our Collaboration with the Saltire Scholars Programme

CentreStage is the first Charity to join the Saltire Scholars Programme

In the Summer of 2025, CentreStage proudly joined the Saltire Scholars Programme, becoming the first Charity to host a Scholar.

The programme, run by Entrepreneurial Scotland, is designed to find, grow and connect students with the ambition and potential of becoming the next generation of leaders. This shared focus on unlocking potential made it a natural fit for CentreStage, offering us the opportunity to nurture talent in a whole new way.

From June, Kirsten joined us from the University of Glasgow to support our Marketing and Communications team. During her time, she developed skills across content development and creation, social media strategy, and internal communications. Kirsten was trusted to drive and create her own impact, while being mentored by Jamie Pearson, our Communications Officer who had freshly completed the programme before joining CentreStage.

Having two Saltire Scholars together created a powerful exchange of learning, creativity, and reflection. Kirsten’s energy and enthusiasm have made a mark on our organisation, and her time here highlighted the value of investing in young people.

CentreStage Founder and CEO, Fiona McKenzie said,

The Saltire Programme is an outstanding way of enabling young people to develop the confidence, skills and connections they need, while also bringing fresh energy and perspective into organisations. This September, we wished our Chief of People & Operations, Andy Swanson, a very happy retirement. But we know it's not goodbye!

We held a special farewell gathering in our Circle Lounge for staff and neighbours to say goodbye to Andy and reflect on his many achievements over the years. Not only his years of service, but the care, vision and joy he has poured into CentreStage and our teams. He's been a part of the CentreStage community since our early days, continuously reminding us of the power of people as we grow in Ayrshire.

Andy has shaped culture, inspiring and empowering teams to create conditions where people, both staff and participants, can thrive. His lessons and legacy are woven into everything we do, and though he may have stepped away from the day-to-day, his influence will continue to inspire us all.

Thanks for everything, Andy!

CentreStage Supports the Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation

CentreStage's Dance Theatre participants were honoured to perform at the 2025 Black & Red Ball in support of the Lauren Currie Foundation

We were honoured to be invited to perform at the Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation’s Black and Red Ball last weekend.

For 15 years, the Foundation has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of vasculitis and support those affected, in memory of Lauren, who tragically passed away at just 15. This invitation to perform was especially meaningful as Lauren was an original member of CentreStage back in 2006. What has been achieved in her name is remarkable, and this year’s event was both a memorial and celebration of that impact.

Six of our S4-6 Dance theatre group danced to a medley of songs from Twilight – Lauren’s favourite film franchise – adding a very special touch to the evening. Choreographed by Isla Grant, they used their creativity to connect and tell a powerful story.

It was a privilege to support an organisation that has done so much to create hope and awareness while supporting hundreds of families over the past 15 years.

Scottish Learning Disability Week: Reflecting on Inclusion

During Scottish Learning Disability Week, we reflected on what inclusion looks like in practice, not just words.

As one of our core values, inclusion is woven into everything we do. From our sensory room and dedicated ASN activities, to ensuring all our classes are fully accessible, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to perform, create, and experience the joy of the arts.

A key highlight of the week was presenting the incredible Lindsay Williamson with a Volunteer Beyond Award. Lindsay so generously donates her time to support our Café Bar team. While studies continue to show that people with learning disabilities are more likely to experience loneliness, we’re doing our bit to create inclusive communities where everyone belongs. Like all our volunteers, Lindsay is a much-valued part of our community and when receiving her award she shared, “I’m loving it here. I love the staff, I just love everything,”.

When not volunteering with us, Lindsay can be found upstairs in our neighbourhood, providing administrative support to our partners, Ayrshire Autism Support. People like Lindsay embody the values of inclusion and kindness that help create communities where everyone is respected and able to thrive.

Our many neighbourhood partnerships with the likes of the National Autistic Society and NEST are working with us to create a wrap-around community where everyone feels welcomed, supported, and empowered to unlock their potential.

This week has been about celebrating the talents and contributions of people with learning disabilities, while also acknowledging the many challenges they might still face. It calls on all of us to create places where belonging is the standard, no matter your background.

We, and our partners, are committing to building a fairer, kinder, and truly inclusive future.

Winner of Best Kept War Memorial

CentreStage Receives 'Best Kept War Memorial' Recognition

We were privileged to be recognised with a 'Best Kept War Memorial' certificate for our care of the WWI memorial in our Gathering space. Caring for this memorial is both a privilege and responsibility that we hold close to our hearts.

Hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds pass and take in this memorial each week, the names of the Masters and Students of Kilmarnock Academy will never be forgotten. The community we have built within the walls where they once taught and studied is a constant reminder of their ultimate sacrifice. We are forever grateful for the joy and freedom we're able to experience because of them.

We look forward to many more years of caring for this memorial. Lest we forget.

Gemma's CentreStage Journey

Gemma's CentreStage Journey

Over the last 19 years, CentreStage has opened many doors for young people looking to pursue their passion for the arts, giving them the space to develop their strengths and unlock their potential. Aged nine, Gemma was introduced to CentreStage by one of our outreach programmes and has been on a journey with us since.

Our outreach programmes aimed to provide access and opportunities in the arts to people who might otherwise go without – ensuring everyone has the chance to be included, and to find their place. Following a visit to Gemma’s school, she joined us at CentreStage every Saturday morning and eventually performed in her first show, ‘The Little Mermaid Jr.’

When recounting her first performance, Gemma, like many others, had this to say:

“I remember having terrible stage fright because I’d never sang in-front of anyone before and I refused to be in the second show”.

Despite her stage fright, Gemma persevered and CentreStage gave her the tools to overcome her anxieties towards performing. Supported by leaders, CentreStage built up her confidence and she continued to flourish, going on to perform in musicals including ‘Annie’ and ‘Hairspray’. These productions were shown in theatre across the community, providing opportunities for everyone to watch, and be a part of the CentreStage magic.

When she turned 14, she began to volunteer during the primary 4-7s summer camp. Due to her incredible work and dedication, she took on a role within the creative learning team when she was 17. She supported and led musical theatre and dance theatre classes for young people, as well as getting involved in many of our funded projects. During her time as a class leader, her achievements include being involved in the choreography for the Dance Theatre show ‘Dig’, co-directing ‘Beauty and the Beast’, and writing and directing the exclusive show ‘Jungle Jigsaw’. Gemma became a fond and well- known face around the building because of everything she has been involved in throughout her CentreStage journey.

Throughout her time as a leader, Gemma became a role model and someone the young participants could look up to. Reflecting upon her time teaching, participants spoke about the influence and positivity Gemma spread in the classes she led:

“Gemma has been my favourite inspiration.”

“Just a big thank you to Matt, Gemma and Corran for helping me through this and helping me gain my confidence.”

“Gemma, Matt and Corran are amazing people to teach me, they are so kind, sweet and helpful, give me big hugs when they know I need it most, they are the kindest people in the world. “

One participant wrote to Gemma personally as a thank you for all the incredible support provided during her time at CentreStage which really shows the impact she had across all the participants she engaged with.

“I just really wanted to say thank you. I’ve never felt more at home than this. CentreStage is my comfort place all thanks to you, Matt and Corran. I didn’t give up when I most wanted to. I’ve struggled with my confidence since forever, but you and the others made me realise it’s okay to be myself. I never would’ve made it to this show if it wasn’t for your support. CentreStage is like a second home to me, and I hope to continue doing shows here for a long time”.

When asked about her time at CentreStage Gemma emphasised the ability the organisation has to transform people’s confidence in the most positive manner. She said:

“CentreStage constantly builds people up to reach their potential in a positive way which has really helped my confidence grow. CentreStage has sparked my interest in theatre. If it wasn’t for CentreStage I don’t think I would have studied, it in college and university.”

If it had not been for the arts being taken into communities such as Ardeer, participants like Gemma may never have unleashed their potential and talent for theatre, and the resulting opportunities and aspirations that led her to being accepted into Urdang University.

Gemma’s journey was forever changed that one afternoon, eleven years ago in Ardeer. Since being provided the opportunity, Gemma has gone on to perform in several shows from ensemble to lead, co-produced and led productions, and inspired another generation to explore the arts.

Our Creative Team Lead, Matt Allison, has had the privilege of being there for the entirety of Gemma’s CentreStage journey and he said:

“I’ve had the privilege of knowing Gemma for nearly 11 years- first as her leader, then her coworker, and more recently her team lead- and I couldn’t be prouder of the journey she’s taken. From her early days as a participant in Ardeer and the 15-21s musical theatre class, she’s always stood out for her commitment, warmth, and incredible stage presence. Some of my favourite moments have been watching her shine as Karessa in tick, tick… BOOM! – her performance of Come to Your Senses was genuinely beautiful and moving – and as Pilar in Legally Blonde, full of sass sparkle, and joy (and yes… “you off the hizzle g!”). Most recently, having her as choreographer and assistant director for Sister Act in May was an absolute pleasure. She brought such creativity, care, and calm to the process, and was a brilliant support to the cast and to me. Gemma is a hugely valued and much-loved part of the CentreStage family, and I have no doubt she’ll thrive at Urdang. We’ll miss her loads, but we’re all cheering her on for the exciting next chapter”.

The next chapter of Gemma’s life brings new opportunities and we fondly wave goodbye as she moves on to study Musical Theatre in Urdang University in London. Everyone at CentreStage would like to thank Gemma for all the hard work and dedication she has put into the organisation, and we wish her all the best in London!

Key Visits of Summer 2025

Over our typically quieter summer period, we’ve enjoyed a few special visits from high-profile individuals in the public and private sectors.

In June, we welcomed leaders from the Scottish Government’s Directorate for Strategy and Delivery for two days of learning at CentreStage. Both days were filled with conversations about the power of place and our aspirations for the future. They left feeling energised, and grateful for our staff’s positivity and support during the visit.

The Director General of Communities, Louise MacDonald OBE, spent the morning with us in July. As Louise approaches retirement, she has been keen to engage with community organisations at the forefront of social change, public sector reform, and tackling child poverty. Following her visit, we received a special ‘thank you’ note expressing her enjoyment of the passion in energy evident in every conversation. As well as her appreciation of how closely we are already working with the Scottish government to align and deliver our priorities.

Marion Fulker AM, from Perth, Australia, popped in on day 3 of her study tour of Scotland. Marion is investigating approaches to social change and has several regional and community development projects across the country on her list – we were privileged to be one of them. She was joined by Alastair Dobson, Managing Director of Taste of Arran, and it’s thanks to him that this visit was possible.

We feel centrally positioned with the current Scottish Government’s priorities and our neighbourhood model fully demonstrates just what is possible when come together and work with the willing. Each visit serves as recognition of what we, together with our neighbourhood partners, are achieving. The question now is what more can we do together? and we’re already working towards the answer.

Our Volunteer Thank You Event

We Celebrated our Volunteers with a BBQ Afternoon!

Following volunteer week, we wanted to take a pause and shine a spotlight on those who quietly fuel so much of what we do. So, earlier this week, we celebrated with a Volunteer ‘Thank You’ afternoon.

From entertainment provided by our staff and volunteers to an indoor and words from our Chair, Willie Mackie, and Founder, Fiona, the afternoon was a reminder of what makes this place tick: people showing up for each other, across generations and backgrounds, united by a shared sense of purpose and belonging. Each week, they make our community stronger, more resilient and a whole lot more smiley – just by showing up.

To top it off, we celebrated Hugh as our Volunteer of the Year. Hugh has supported us for over 11 years and while he has now handed back his lanyard, he’ll remain a part of our Unlikely Lads and as he calls it, “The CentreStage Family”.

We talk a lot about breaking down barriers and unlocking potential, but our volunteers make it real. For example, Ross joined us as a volunteer a few years ago, and since then, he’s supported several departments and is now a proud employee of our Café Bar team. He shared how he couldn’t imagine what his life would be like now had he not found CentreStage.

Thank you to everyone who gives their time and heart to make CentreStage what it is. We truly couldn’t do it without you.

Our Tree of Hope

The CentreStage Donor Tree

Rooted in community, growing with you. In the heart of CentreStage, something extraordinary is taking root. The Tree of Hope is more than a mural; it is a symbol of growth, generosity, and connection.

Hand-painted by CentreStage volunteer and artist Carol Greenwood, the mural's creation involved carefully balancing the tree's form with the wall's structure and selecting colours that work in harmony with the leather leaves. Carol crafted this piece with care and intention, creating a narrative of liveliness through art that reflects CentreStage's essence.

Beside the tree, a poem by Scott McCarroll offers an insightful description of the meaning behind this mural. ‘The Mighty Oak’, a story about an acorn growing into a beautiful oak tree, symbolises how small acts of care and nurturing can help an individual flourish into something strong and enduring. CentreStage is its own ecosystem, its own oak tree, where every person plays a vital role in sustaining the joy and aspirations of others.

Now, you can bring the Tree of Hope to life. With a £30 donation, you can purchase a unique leaf created from recycled leather. Toby Ingram is kindly donating his time to teach fellow CentreStage volunteers the craftmanship of creating these leaves. Each can be engraved with your personalised message, acting as a visual representation of your support for CentreStage’s mission. Whether in celebration, remembrance, or simply as a gift, your leaf will become part of the artwork on the wall.

The Tree of Hope draws on a powerful idea: that each falling leaf is not an end, but the beginning of something new. Every leaf tells a story. Every leaf makes a difference. Your support helps CentreStage continue its vital work – bringing joy, music, learning and connection to people of all ages background and community.

We were privileged to welcome leaders from The Scottish Government ’s Directorate for Strategy and Delivery for two days of learning at CentreStage. Both days were filled with conversations about the power of place and our aspirations for the future. The Scottish Government has supported us for almost 10 years, and this was an excellent opportunity to reflect on everything we have achieved since – including Scotland’s largest community asset transfer.

Looking forward to continued collaboration and seeing what more we can do together.

Community Awareness Event - 30th May 2025

On Friday 30th May CentreStage hosted our first Community Awareness Event with the support of our Neighbours. The event brought together multiple community-based services to collaborate, learn, network, and engage with the public. It provided organisations and the public the opportunity to hear about the support that is offered throughout the community. It demonstrated how easily accessible the support offered by organisations truly can be when organisations come together.

The event ran throughout the morning and open to anyone to attend. Each organisation had their own representative and stall sharing information, conversations, and experiences. In addition, with the support of Barclays Bank a session was held all about the prevention of banking related scam and frauds. They highlighted the threat of scams and frauds, in the need for greater awareness within the community. Especially with the rise of artificial intelligence. Their presentation was interactive, allowing people to share their own experiences and share their learning.

Lauren from Barclays Community Initiative who helped deliver the presentation said:

“This was a fantastic event, bringing services from the CentreStage Neighbourhood and wider community together! A great opportunity to raise awareness of the support we can provide, while connecting with each other and the people within our local communities.”

The purpose of the CentreStage Village is to demonstrate how a place-based model of support can allow for greater social impact within the community when services situated together work collaboratively. Within the CentreStage site is the Neighbourhood which consists of organisations that align with CentreStage's’ values of: Hope, Joy, Inclusion, and Aspiration. These services span key areas such as finance, housing, social security, advocacy, health and social care, childcare, tuition, employability, and many more. They each provide their services to those in the community who need them most and working in close proximity means the barriers to referrals, introductions, and communication are removed. It is made up of cross- sector organisations where collaborating, networking and learning is crucial and natural to the day-to-day operations at the Village. Events like these are the epitome of our model and it was a great opportunity to put a spotlight on the collective work being achieved. The Neighbourhood being based at CentreStage ensures that services cohabit together in a place which is safe, inclusive, and accessible to all. Ensuring there are no barriers for the community to access the support they need.

“We were delighted to be host to so many wonderful organisations and the attendance has been brilliant. CentreStage is committed to the principle that those who need support are able to access the resources they need seamlessly and events such as today put a spotlight on the ability and opportunity the CentreStage Village is capable of in bringing services together to share, learn and work together. We believe it takes a village to truly support a community, and we couldn’t do all the amazing work which happens everyday across the site without the care, passion, and dedication of these organisations.”

As a result of the success, we hope to bring more events just like this one to the community.

With each show they perform, our Aspire companies paint a picture of what inclusion really looks like. Boxset Bonanza was no exception - same stage, same opportunities, same experience.

This is what happens when the arts sit at the heart of a community: a place where everyone belongs, and a future built on shared potential.

We know that people and families with ASN still face barriers to creative and community opportunities. But at CentreStage, we believe everyone should have equitable access to opportunities where they can express themselves, unlock their potential, and develop their strengths.

Our Aspire participants are always keen to let us know that they feel happier, more independent, and proud of what they achieve while part of our community. We couldn't be prouder of them for creating so many magical moments.

CentreStage at Dance Theatre 2025

CentreStage Dance Theatre Shine

Our S1-3 and S4-6 Dance Theatre companies recently participated in Dance Fest at the Gaiety for the third year running. With each performance, our Dance Theatre groups aspire to tell moving stories through choreography and music. This year, their performance of ‘Promise to Stay in Touch’ marked the last time they will perform together before some members move on to university, making it especially poignant.

Opportunities like these unlock so much for our young people, allowing them to develop their strengths while becoming part of a close-knit, supportive community. Not only in Dance Theatre, but right across CentreStage.

They’re also incredibly important to those taking part. Here’s what one of the participants had to say, “Dance fest has definitely boosted my confidence, especially after being injured. Having support from everyone in my class and getting to cheer for all the other amazing groups and having them do the same for you is amazing. It's an amazing opportunity and I'm so grateful to do it with such lovely people.”

Team CentreStage Abseil 100ft in aid of 'Get Happy'

Eight of the incredible CentreStage team descended 100ft from the iconic Falkirk Wheel to fundraise for our Get Happy programme.

On Friday 14 ^th March, Claire, Ru, Sarah, David, Neal, Calum, Isla and Penny went above and beyond to support us in bringing joy, community, and connection to individuals across Ayrshire. Our Get Happy programme currently supports over 700 individuals of all ages, abilities, and circumstances each week. Activities span from our ‘Sing & Smile’ and ‘Wriggle & Rhyme’ for babies and toddlers to the ‘Unlikely Lads Choir’ and ‘Gie It Laldy’ for older people at risk of loneliness and those living with dementia.

At its core, Get Happy is a programme created to ensure everyone can find their place, their people, and their passion. CentreStage is a place where people belong and community flourishes.

Our Founder Speaks at the 2024 Founders Conference

At the prestigious Founders Conference hosted by The Hunter Foundation at Gleneagles, our founder, Fiona McKenzie OBE, delivered a speech that sparked conversations. Surrounded by innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders, Fiona brought a fresh perspective to the table—one that ties Scotland’s economic growth to its social wellbeing.

The Challenge We Face:

· Nearly 1 in 4 children in Scotland grow up in poverty.

· 23% of working-age Scots are economically inactive, often due to mental health challenges

· Billions have been spent addressing poverty and educational attainment gaps, yet the results remain disheartening

These statistics don’t just represent numbers. They reflect untapped potential, lives held back, and futures compromised. This presents the question: What if we stopped seeing economic growth as something separate from social progress?

CentreStage and the 13 other social enterprises and charities in the Changemakers network are proving that there’s a more effective way.

The collective mission is not just about pulling people out of crisis, but about preventing them from falling in the first place.

At CentreStage alone:

50% of our turnover is generated from self-sustaining income.
Every week, we support over 2,500 individuals aged from birth through 106 years, helping them live purposeful, connected lives less dependent on public services

A Call to Action for Scotland’s Business Leaders

To the entrepreneurs and leaders in the room, Fiona posed a challenge:

“What if we applied your entrepreneurial spirit to our communities? What if we invested not just in profits, but in people?”

The Changemakers are showing what’s possible.

This initiative from the Hunter Foundation is amplifying the voices of Scotland’s social enterprises. These organisations—problem-solvers, poverty-reducers, community-builders, and opportunity-creators—are united by one trait: they are relentless.

Together, this network is demonstrating that a new model of social change is possible. One that costs less, delivers better outcomes, and builds stronger futures. But, we cannot do this alone.

How You Can Help

No one sector can solve these challenges. It takes collaboration between the public, private, and third sectors to create real change.

Here’s how you can get involved:

Invest in Communities : Consider supporting social enterprises through funding, partnerships, donations, or resources.
Advocate for Change : Use your platform to amplify the work of Changemakers in your community.
Join the Movement : Whether as a partner, volunteer, or supporter, there’s a role for everyone in creating a fairer Scotland.

The First Minister Visits CentreStage

This Challenging Poverty Week, it was our pleasure to welcome the First Minister, John Swinney, to meet some of our neighbours and participants who have experienced the collective impact of our work. With SIMD 2020 data revealing that 4% of Scotland's most deprived data-zones are in East Ayrshire, the scale of the challenge of poverty in our community is clear. With almost 1 in 4 of our own participants being from Scotland’s most deprived areas, us and our neighbours are proud to be recognised as key players in tackling many of the issues associated with poverty and social exclusion in East Ayrshire.

During his visit, he was able to hear from the Unlikely Lads, our Neighbours, NC College participants, and others that benefit from the likes of our Get Happy and Connect programmes.

By acting as a connector, anyone who enters CentreStage has almost instant access to mental health services, housing support, financial advice, employability skills, and most importantly, a safe space. Since being founded in 2006, with the support of The Hunter Foundation, The Scottish Government, and East Ayrshire Council, we've been testing and refining this wrap-around support model. In 2024, CentreStage is so much more than a place of joy and connection, we're a pathway to building healthier, safer lives for individuals and families.

By supporting or investing in Centrestage, you’re not only changing lives today, but you’re also helping to reduce the reliance on costly services tomorrow. Our inclusive approach offers vital support early on, empowering individuals to find their voice, gain confidence, and move forward in life independently.

Voices of CentreStage – Nashville Edition: A Celebration of Community and Connection

At CentreStage, we bring people together with the power of the arts. Since our establishment in 2006, our community Gospel choir has been at the heart of this mission, meeting every Friday night, year-round. What began as a simple gathering has blossomed into a joyous, inclusive community where people of all ages and backgrounds find a place to belong, connect, and sing their hearts out.

We were thrilled to present "Voices of CentreStage - Nashville Edition," which was nothing short of magical. This show brought together 58 singers, aged from their early teens to over 70, who took to the stage to share their voices and their joy with our audience. Among them were participants from our Gospel Choir, as well as those from our free ‘Get Happy @ CentreStage’ activities, including Oor Wee Choir, RockItMen, and Chicks@6. For many, this was more than just a performance; it was a gateway to new opportunities, friendships, and a sense of belonging that will last long after the final note has been sung.

What made this event particularly special was the incredible diversity of our performers. With 38 participants coming from our fully funded classes and 24% having Additional Support Needs (ASN), this show was a true celebration of inclusion. In addition, we were able to offer 30 complimentary tickets to audience members who might not otherwise have had the means to attend, ensuring that the experience of music could be enjoyed by as many as possible.

The energy in the room was electric as the performers, supported by the talented Hoolet’s violinist Helen, united in the ultimate hoedown of harmonies. The Nashville-inspired setlist was filled with tunes that had the audience clapping, singing, and shedding a few happy tears. Beyond the music, what truly shone through was the sense of community and connection that defines CentreStage.

Through events like this, we’re not just entertaining our audiences; we’re creating a space where everyone, regardless of their background or ability, can feel valued, supported, and inspired. The connections formed through these performances extend far beyond the stage, leading to new friendships, increased awareness of the wider opportunities at CentreStage, and seamless access to our CS Neighbourhood services. By integrating our Get Happy programme with these services, we’re making it easier for participants to find what they need, without the need for referrals, and ensuring that everyone who walks through our doors feels welcome.

As we reflect on this event, we’re filled with gratitude for the incredible people who make up our CentreStage family. The "Voices of CentreStage - Nashville Edition" was a celebration of what’s possible when we come together in the spirit of hope, joy, and an inclusive community. It’s a testament to the power of music to spread joy and transform lives.

The Unlikely Lads Shine at Healing Arts Scotland Wellbeing Conference

At CentreStage, we’ve always believed in the transformative power of the arts and ensured they remain at the heart of everything we do. Whether it's singing, dancing, acting, or simply expressing yourself, the arts offer an avenue for joy, connection, and healing. We were thrilled when our very own Unlikely Lads were invited to perform at the Healing Arts Wellbeing Conference in Glasgow for senior members of Public Health Scotland. Healing Arts Scotland week is a programme organised by Scottish Ballet and Jameel Arts and Health Lab, aiming to highlight the benefits that the arts can have on mental, physical, and social health.

Healing Arts Scotland week is a statement about the role of the arts and inclusion in promoting health and wellbeing across Scotland and beyond. For our Unlikely Lads, this was a golden opportunity to share their passion and talent with a broader audience. Following their performance, our own Scott McCarroll gave an inspiring and insightful presentation and interview with the lads. Scott demonstrated that with their own unique backgrounds and experiences, each of the lads maximise the potential benefits of the arts on their mental and physical health.

At the heart of it all is a celebration of joy—an emotion that is central to everything we do at CentreStage. Our Unlikely Lads embody this spirit, and their performance was a powerful reminder of how the arts can bring people together, lift spirits and create lasting memories.

Through our Get Happy programme, we offer a wide range of free arts and performance classes designed to promote happiness and community among participants. Like everything at CentreStage, these classes are open to everyone, regardless of age, background, or ability, and provide a safe space for individuals to explore their creativity, build confidence, and connect with others. By providing free access to the arts, we’re not only helping individuals to rediscover their passions but also contributing to the improvement of their health.

We believe that the arts should be accessible to all, and we’re proud to offer these opportunities. The arts have the power to change lives and as our Unlikely Lads demonstrated in Glasgow, when given the chance to shine, everyone can make their mark.

Early Intervention: The Key to Tackling Poverty

At CentreStage, our commitment to fostering hope, joy, aspiration, and inclusion in the community takes many forms. In August, we were honoured to host the East Ayrshire Round Table Conference, an event focused on “Early Intervention: The Key to Tackling Poverty.” This conference brought together some of the most influential voices in the area, including our very own founder, Fiona McKenzie OBE, alongside Eddie Fraser, Chief Executive of East Ayrshire Council, Joseph McLachlan, CFO of East Ayrshire Council, and Professor Graeme Roy, an academic known for his work on economic and social issues.

The theme of the conference was centred around early intervention—a principle that CentreStage puts into action. Early intervention is not just a strategy; it is a commitment to breaking the cycles of poverty and inequality by addressing issues before they escalate. This approach is critical in ensuring that individuals and families find what they need at the right time, empowering them to build more fulfilling lives.

Throughout the discussions, the importance of place and wellbeing, tackling inequality, and empowering communities was underscored. Each speaker brought valuable insights, exploring how early intervention can serve as a powerful tool in addressing the root causes of inequality. It was a day of sharing visions for a more equitable future in East Ayrshire.

At CentreStage, our values of hope, joy, aspiration, and inclusion are at the heart of everything we do. We are privileged to be recognised as a place where early intervention is more than just a concept—it's a reality in action.

The constellation of organisations and services across our neighbourhood are central to our mission. These partners allow us to provide a wide range of resources to those who need them most, from no cost ‘Get Happy’ activities and employability programmes to creative arts and mental health activities. By working closely with our neighbourhood, we ensure that everyone who walks through our doors has access to the support they need, whether that’s guidance, education, or simply a place to feel home.

We believe in creating environments where everyone is included, where joy is celebrated, and where aspirations are brought to life. Early intervention reflects these values—it's about giving people the tools and support they need to thrive, long before challenges become overwhelming. The opportunity to host such a crucial conversation on our campus highlights the role we play in East Ayrshire’s efforts to tackle poverty and inequality at its roots.

As we continue to move forward, CentreStage remains dedicated to our mission of connecting people, empowering communities, and creating opportunities for all. We are grateful to our neighbourhood organisations who offer vital services and support, and to all those who attended the conference, sharing their knowledge and experiences.

Monster & Me

At CentreStage, we pride ourselves on igniting hope, joy, aspiration, and inclusion within our participants and audiences. Our recent production, 'The Monster & Me,' exemplified this mission through its powerful storytelling and moving performances centred around a delicate narrative of grief—a reality far too common for young people across Scotland.

This story, following a young boy's grief as he loses his mother to cancer, was portrayed by a cast varying in age and background. The production brought together a diverse cast of adults and teenagers, along with the creative talents of Ayrshire College NC Production Arts students, a course we host the practical elements of.

This poignant production was created and directed by our young colleague Isla Grant, who joined CentreStage as a participant in 2006 and is now proudly employed by us. Her journey from young participant to creative leader is a testament to the nurturing environment and opportunities for growth that CentreStage provides. Lois McCreadie and Katy Porter, both long-time

participants, also assisted in the direction of this production. It’s a delight to see our young talent further develop their skills, give back, and blaze the path for those behind them.

We are privileged to work closely with organisations like NHS Ayrshire & Arran, Who Cares?, Kinship Care, and Beautiful Inside and Out, who operate within the CentreStage village and provide vital support to young people and adults in need. These partnerships are essential in creating a supportive environment and community where people can find hope, healing, and a sense of belonging.

To name a few of the cast: Harry and Sophie captured the challenging role of Connor with care, talent, and maturity. Grace took on the role of Lily, a hopeless yet loyal friend, with remarkable ease. Hannah, an original CentreStage participant and now a teacher, illuminated the stage as Mum, while Eve perfectly embodied Gran. Our ensemble of dancers electrified the stage, bringing this delicate and heartfelt story to life. Alison Sinclair and her college students designs and creations realised the vision of the show, while the tech crew ensured all aspects of light and sound enhanced the storytelling.

'The Monster & Me' was a testament to the transformative power of the arts to heal, connect, and inspire. We are grateful to everyone involved, from performers to our invaluable partners and behind-the-scenes team. Together, we created a memorable experience that touched the hearts of many and reinforced the importance of hope, inclusion, joy, and aspiration.

Let's continue to support each other and create spaces where important stories like these can be shared and heard.

CentreStage choir member goes for gold in Berlin!

Ellis Wilson, heads to the Special Olympics in Berlin on 11th June

Here at CentreStage we are proud of all the achievements of our participants and when someone as talented as Ellis Wilson lets us know she is heading to the Special Olympics in Berlin to compete we couldn't not shout about her achievements.

Ellis is a much loved and 'well kent' face around CentreStage taking part in our Gospel Choir, Oor Wee Choir and our Creativity Cafe every week, regularly taking to the stage during our shows and events and showcasing her wonderful art that she creates. It also turns out that the arts are not where her talents stop, Ellis has been involved in the Special Olympics GB squad since she was a youngster where she competed in horse riding.

However, this time she is switching her horse for the bike as she heads to Berlin for this summer's games to compete in cycling.

Ellis said; 'I am excited to get to Berlin but I am definitely starting to get nervous as the games get closer and closer, I just hope I can do a great job and have fun at the same time. I am usually competing with my horse so it will be a different experience this time'

CentreStage Communities is a charity based in Kilmarnock. Young people graduate from Connect programme

CentreStage and Ayrshire College celebrate the achievements over 50 young people

On Wednesday 17th May, over 50 young people from schools across East Ayrshire graduated from the Connect programme, a partnership programme between CentreStage and Ayrshire College which seeks to provide opportunities for young people not engaging fully with school.

The celebration event brought together all of the young people who took part this year along with their teachers and parents to showcase some of the impressive work they have been involved in.

This year, the young people were working towards Creative Industries Award Levels 4 and 5 for the first time, which focuses on developing basic knowledge and understanding of practical aspects of the creative industries. It is aimed at those who may want to explore the many activities and opportunities available in the creative industries sector, including: theatre and performance, television and radio broadcasting, music and video.

They supported our wider team in building and painting many of our sets for CentreStage shows such as Through The Deep Dark Wood, Elf and flagship show, The Wedding Singer. As well as creating 3D scene boxes which were entered in to a prestigious competition and many other creative activities.

CentreStage was also able to provide a wider range of skills, helping the young people work on their life skills, such as making soup and baking alongside our signature singing and performing opportunities which all went towards creating a holistic set of skills for them all.

The rededication of Kilmarnock Academy War memorial to mark 100 ^th anniversary.

CentreStage hosts service to mark important date

On Friday 24 ^th March, ex-service men and women, members of the Royal British Legion along with Deputy Provost and East Ayrshire councillors gathered at CentreStage, in the former Kilmarnock Academy building, to rededicate Kilmarnock’s first war memorial on its 100 ^th anniversary.

The memorial was unveiled on 24 ^th March 1923, 4 years before the Town’s own memorial. The Kilmarnock Standard of the time described it; ‘The Stateliness of its proportions, its simplicity and dignity and quiet restfulness, hold and charm the eye’

The Kilmarnock Academy memorial recognises those who fought and died in the Great War who were pupils and masters of the former school.

Alongside readings and a history of the war memorial itself, invited guests also listened to music from CentreStage’s Unlikely Lads and other musical performers with songs such as Oh Danny Boy and The Green Fields of France before Stewart Finlay, Royal British Legion read ‘For The Fallen’ preceding the Last Post.

Deputy Provost, Claire Allison, was invited to lay the wreath to mark the service.

CentreStage maintains the War Memorial, which is open to the public, and there is also a book of biographies of the men who are named on the monument itself.

Members of the public are welcome to view the memorial at any time within CentreStage.

CentreStage hosts first health event focused on menopause

On Sunday 5 ^th February 2023, CentreStage, hosted over 200 women at our first menopause education event with expert health professionals speaking alongside CentreStage’s signature musical performances.

On Sunday 5 February, 200 women gathered at CentreStage in Kilmarnock to hear from health experts, take part in health promoting activities, and participate in a fun and interactive CentreStage performance with a menopause twist!

Thanks to funding from NHS Ayrshire and Arran’s Public Health team, Dr Jocelyn Skaaning and an experienced line-up of expert colleagues lead discussions on hot topics covering perimenopause and menopause, treatment for symptoms, HRT and alternatives (hormone replacement therapy), lifestyle, diet and exercise advice, sex and contraception after 40 and vulval health. 80% of the women who attended said they left feeling more confident than they did beforehand in their menopause knowledge and understanding.

Performances from CentreStage’s ‘Chicks @ 6’ choir and various performers with songs such as ‘Is it me or is it hot in here’ from the comedy singing group, Fascinating Aida was performed in our state-of-the-art theatre. And a rousing rendition of Menopause Rhapsody, a fun take on the Queen classic.

Tree of Trees gifted to CentreStage

Ayrshire charity, CentreStage Communities, has received the gift of a special tree from the “Tree of Trees” sculpture which stood tall as a message of hope, regeneration and optimism to the nation and the world as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The spectacular 21-metre ‘Tree of Trees’ sculpture featuring 350 British native trees was created outside Buckingham Palace as an exciting centrepiece of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend celebrations in June.

The sculpture reflects the joyful Jubilee tree planting which has swept the nation as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy project (QGC), inspiring people and organisations to plant over a million trees during its first season, from October to March.

The 350 trees that formed part of the sculpture were set in recycled aluminium pots embossed with Her Majesty’s cypher and are now being gifted to selected community groups and organisations to celebrate their work and inspire the next generation of tree planters across the nation. Her Majesty planted over 1,500 trees all over the world during her 70-year reign.

The gift of the tree is a thank you for all the valuable and tireless work that volunteers and individuals undertake for the benefit of their communities.

It is also a celebration of the diverse communities that come together for the benefit of all, often using the natural environment to improve health and wellbeing. The trees planted across the country as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy will continue to spread this message, in honour of her extraordinary service to her country and her people.

CentreStage joins over 300 organisations from across the UK who were recently announced by the QGC as recipients of these special trees in The Queen’s name.

Presented by the Lord-Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran, Sheriff Iona McDonald OBE, the tree was planted on Tuesday 11 ^th October 2022 at CentreStage attended by Fiona McKenzie, Founder and Paul McColgan, CEO and Chair Willie Mackie with some of our volunteers who are integral to the day to day running of CentreStage.

Paul McColgan, CEO of CentreStage said: “We are delighted to be chosen to receive a tree from the Queens Green Canopy Tree of Trees. We have created a close-knit community here in our arts and wellbeing hub at CentreStage and are grateful to the QGC for recognising us as part of the wider community of Ayrshire in bringing people together regardless of background or ability to take part in the arts. This special tree represents the hope and aspiration we want to share with our participants here.

“As one of over 300 organisations across the UK, CentreStage is proud to become part of the living legacy in honour and loving memory of Her Majesty.”

The Lord-Lieutenant Sheriff Iona McDonald OBE remarked: “I am delighted that CentreStage have been chosen to receive this tree as it recognises the significant contribution that they make to the wider community in Ayrshire through their wide range of activities. “

Provost of East Ayrshire, Jim Todd, said: “CentreStage is a huge part of the East Ayrshire community and it is fitting, given the very positive and aspirational work it does with people of all ages, that it has been chosen to receive this special tree. Having it at CentreStage will be a wonderful way for current and future generations to remember Her Majesty and the importance of the Queen’s Green Canopy project.”

Dr Willie Mackie appointed as Chair of CentreStage

CentreStage is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Willie Mackie as the new Chair.

Willie joins CentreStage with vast experience, notably in the financial industry but more recently as Interim Chair of Scottish Enterprise, serving on the Board of Prestwick Airport and past Chair of Ayrshire College.

In November 2019, Willie was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of The West of Scotland in recognition of his contribution to business, skills and economic development.

Outgoing Chair, Eleanor McLaren said: “Willie brings a wealth of experience as a non-executive Director, connections across the breadth of Scotland and a real passion for the work of CentreStage. His credentials are second to none and we give him the warmest of CentreStage welcomes”.

CentreStage holds first open day since 2019 .

On Sunday 7 August CentreStage once again flung open its doors for the first official open day since before the pandemic and the first proper open day in the new CentreStage Village.

The open day welcomed hundreds of people, both those new and long-time friends, to experience the breadth of what we have to offer. Theatre performances, choirs, singalong sessions and musical theatre taster classes for our younger participants were all on the agenda – truly something for everyone.

CentreStage prides itself on being an inclusive and welcoming place for everyone to come and join in regardless of age, background or experience with values of hope, aspiration and inclusion and we truly showcased those values today!

The audience heard from our Aspire choir for those with additional support needs along with The Unlikely Lads, our men’s choir for the older generation. We also had a preview of CentreStage’s upcoming production The Wedding Singer which takes place in our theatre in October and much much more! CentreStage Pick Up, ‘Best Theatre in Scotland’ for the Second Time.

The Scottish Hospitality Awards returned on Monday 20th June 2022, held at The Marriott Hotel, Glasgow, and we are delighted to share that CentreStage picked up the ‘Best Theatre in Scotland’ trophy - an award we also accomplished back in 2019.

The prestigious event, hosted by Scottish personality, Gina McKie, presented 32 awards to the deserving winners, acknowledging their hard work and determination to making Scotland an incredible place for all things hospitality.

So much has changed at CentreStage since we won the award back in 2019. We are in a new home in the regenerated former Kilmarnock Academy. We have a new state of the art theatre, that only opened its doors back in August 2021. What has not changed is our commitment to ensure our award-winning theatre is a place for the community to come together, to unlock potential and develop strengths and talents through active participation in the arts. We must thank our team and customers for their continued support and dedication - if it wasn’t for them, none of this would have been possible. Also, sincere thanks go to the numerous contractors, suppliers and funders who enabled the transformation of the former school Assembly Hall into what is now ‘Scotland’s Best Theatre 2022’.

The Scottish Hospitality Awards return this year after a difficult period for the industry, and after a tremendous number of nominations received, the finalists have been revealed for the black-tie event that will be held on 20 ^th June 2022 at The Marriott Hotel, Glasgow. We are delighted to share that CentreStage are finalists in the ‘Best Theatre in Scotland’ category - an award we were bestowed with back in 2019.

Since we delivered our first production ‘All Together Now!’ in our new theatre back in November 2022, the theatre is going from strength to strength with various sell out productions taking place.

Starcatchers, Scotland’s arts and early years organisation, and Andy Cannon, one of Scotland’s leading storytellers is bringing the magic of live performance to Ayrshire’s brand-new performance venue, CentreStage this Spring, with SPIKE! - a dinosaur caper for 3-5-year-olds and their grown-ups.

This exciting dinosaur adventure arrives at CentreStage on Wednesday 25 May, ready to delight its young audiences with a wonderful tale of a little girl, her grandmother, and her favourite dinosaur, powerfully told through theatrical storytelling and dance. This magical story about the passing of time and the tales that bring families together is complete with David Trouton’s inspiring original music, and performers Jennifer Steele, Monica De Ioanni and Louise Montgomery.

Starcatchers has been working in North Ayrshire communities in partnership with Children 1 ^st over the past year as part of Creative Kin, a three-year project bringing together artists and kinship families in the community through art and imaginative play.

Having celebrated a milestone 15 ^th birthday in 2021, with their mission to ensure all Scotland’s youngest children have access to artistic experiences, Starcatchers is delighted to be presenting a unique performance of Spike for the families who have been attending Creative Kin’s weekly creative play sessions.

Creator, Andy Cannon, said, “Spike is an intergenerational tale perfect for families of all ages to enjoy together, this time a little bigger and more adventurous. A dinosaur caper sees an evolution in the lifecycle of Spike from a dinosaur tale back in 2021, with a third performer on stage, plus a slightly evolved set. This is an exciting moment for us to share the next stage of Spike’s journey with our young audiences and immerse ourselves in the world of Mary Anne and her favourite dinosaur.”

Leana Grant, Children 1 ^st North Ayrshire Family Wellbeing Hub Team Leader said, “Offering these opportunities for whole families to be exposed to the world of arts which may not have been a place they would have ventured before or felt comfortable attending, with the relationships families now have with Starcatchers they feel safe and comfortable to try these things. The escapism that these creative sessions and family trips brings, we hear from families, helps reduce feelings of stress and anxiety for carers, brings whole families together spending quality time together connecting and being attuned to one another and also promotes development, play and learning for children using art. Families are being challenged in some ways to channel their creativity and imagination which is building self confidence, improving emotional health and wellbeing and also improving resilience, all of which we believe are so valuable for Kinship families.”

Spike begins its seven-stop tour at The Regal in Bathgate, enjoying two days of performances from Wednesday 18 May. From there the show heads to brand new venue, Centre Stage in Ayrshire before two days performing at the Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival. Next up is two days at The Traverse, and into June visiting Cumbernauld Studio, The Byre in St Andrews, finishing up with 2 days in the Joan Knight Studio at Perth Theatre with the final performance on Saturday 11 June.

We can officially announce that popular Scottish band, ‘Skerryvore’ will be performing at CentreStage Theatre this Spring forming part of their, ‘Together Again Tour.’ Since the band’s gigs resumed in September 2021 they have continued to tour relentlessly across the globe, with sell out appearances at home and abroad – with Kilmarnock now getting ready to welcome the band on Thursday 21 ^st April ’22.

The Unlikely Lads on STV News.

Kilmarnock-based choir, the Unlikely Lads, are celebrating after singing their way into the hearts of their beloved football team. The group of men, with an average age 83, have been singing together for the past ten years at CentreStage, with the choir providing them with a chance to meet friends, socialise and combat loneliness.

It also gives them a chance to belt out some of their favourite hits, including everything from show tunes to Elvis medleys. However, there is one song in their repertoire which receives more passion and power than most - Paper Roses.

The Marie Osmond song is the Kilmarnock Football Club anthem and a clip of the Unlikely Lads’ rendition recently caused quite a stir on social media. So much so, the team mascot showed up at their rehearsal on Thursday to invite them to perform during halftime at a forthcoming match.

Much to their delight, Killie manager Derek McInnes sent them a message saying he was “very impressed” and “is hoping to see them perform at Rugby Park very soon” .

Football stardom aside, the Unlikely Lads means much more to the 20 or so men who attend the choir each week.

Hugh Gorman, 75, told STV News: “They’re all beautiful guys and I am just so glad you came down here to do this today because they are wonderful. This is a wonderful thing for the community here. I didn’t realise I could do this and when I sing, it’s really wonderful.”

David Tindal found solace in the Unlikely Lads when his wife died.

“When I lost my wife, I joined this group and met great friends. The choir has been a godsend to us all and we all enjoy meeting up every week.”

Alan Agnew, the baby of the group at a fresh-faced 57-years-old, explained: “It brought me out of a rut because I’ve had health problems these past few years and just to see all these guys with smiles on their faces - it’s brilliant.”

John Cree is one of the founders of the choir and he wants to encourage more people to get involved in activities like the Unlikely Lads.

He said: “Men when they retire shouldn’t sit in their big chair. They should get out and join in something like this.”

The choir is led by the brilliantly enthusiastic Fiona McKenzie, the founder of CentreStage, who explained that Thursdays simply bring her joy.

“It’s just wonderful. We sit around and sing, talk and laugh. I get so much out of it.”

It’s clear, all the participants do, none more so than 91-year-old dapper William Barclay, who has an inspirational outlook on life.

“I enjoy everything about life. If you want to dance, just dance and don’t drink too much brandy - just a quarter bottle at a time.”

Flexible Childcare Services Scotland (FCSS), Create New Nursery Facilities at CentreStage.

New childcare facilities planned for Kilmarnock’s CentreStage will create an estimated 25 new jobs. The early years and childcare facility for 56 children, that offers before and after school care for 40 kids, will also see four modern apprenticeships being created.

Children attending the early years centre and wraparound care can also access CentreStage’s wide range of classes and activities. Flexible Childcare Services Scotland (FCSS) is working with CentreStage to create the new facilities.

Susan McGhee, chief executive at FCSS, said: ”We are delighted to be working alongside CentreStage on this fantastic project.

“By offering almost 100 childcare places in an area of multiple deprivation we will be able to help families to find and stay in meaningful employment, education, and training, further distancing them from short and long-term poverty.

“The initiatives already being delivered by CentreStage and their existing partners will provide even greater support for families, helping to improve their physical and mental wellbeing and giving them a greater chance of achieving positive outcomes for themselves and the whole family.”

The 56 capacity early learning and childcare facility will be delivered using FCSS’s existing flexible childcare model.

This model means that families can book childcare by the hour and use their 1140 hours flexibly which will help parents be more efficient with their funded hours, saving them potentially hundreds of pounds each month.

FCSS will also create 40 school-age childcare places for before, after school, and during the school holidays. By combining these two services, parents will be able to secure childcare when they need it, helping them to find and continue in meaningful employment, education, or training. In addition to these new childcare services FCSS will provide wraparound support services to reduce pressure on families and provide a holistic, nurturing, and whole family service.

The charity will create a children’s clothing exchange, a toy lending library, and a number of other initiatives identified by service users which could include paediatric first aid training, parenting classes, and repair, reuse, and recycle schemes. Children, young people, and families attending these services will have access to the wide range of activities and events that take place within the CentreStage. These include dance, drama, music, singing, fitness and sports activities.

Fiona McKenzie, CentreStage founder, said: “Many of the families we aim to support are experiencing multiple barriers preventing them from living happy, purposeful lives within their community. One in three children in the area are classed as living in extreme poverty and throughout COVID, they have been even more negatively impacted.

“This project FCSS will make childcare and wrap around activities more accessible and affordable for low-income families. Many of the families who will use the service are from the priority family groups most at risk from living in poverty including lone parent families, families which include a disabled adult or child, minority ethnic families and families where the mother is under 25 years of age.”

After Fifteen Years at CentreStage, Paul is Ready for his Next Challenge.

Paul Mathieson will be stepping down as CEO after leading the organisation through the Covid pandemic and the regeneration of the former Kilmarnock Academy.

Paul launched CentreStage in 2006 with Co-Founder, Fiona McKenzie. After meeting at Grange Academy where they were both secondary teachers, Paul and Fiona decided to leave education and converted a commercial warehouse in Kilmarnock into CentreStage. Over the past 15 years, Paul has worked tirelessly to grow and build the charity culminating in the opening of our new home in August 2021. Now that the regeneration works are completed, Paul is ready for his next challenge.

Paul Mathieson, CentreStage, Co-Founder and CEO , ”When Fiona and I founded CentreStage in 2006 we never could have imagined what would be achieved. There have been many challenges along the way; yet full of incredible moments and highlights that have helped so many in our community. Leading the organisation through such a pivotal time these past two years has certainly been my biggest challenge and also has been my absolute privilege.

As Co-Founder, I will always be on hand to support CentreStage, but I believe that now is the correct time to hand the reins over and allow the organisation to embark on its next chapter. I can’t wait to see what CentreStage will achieve in the months and years to come. The potential is overwhelming, and I know it will be fantastic. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this amazing journey.”

Prior to leaving the organisation at the end of January 2022, Paul will support the CentreStage Board of Trustees with the recruitment process and work with Co-Founder, Fiona McKenzie and Senior Management Team to ensure a full handover for the new CEO who will lead the organisation in 2022 and beyond.

CentreStage hosts ‘The STV Children’s Appeal 2021.’

The STV Children’s Appeal returns for its annual TV fundraising event on Friday 29th of October 2021, with long-term host Lorraine Kelly back at the helm as the charity appeal celebrates its tenth birthday.

Viewers can expect this year’s telefundraiser to look a little different from previous shows, which have traditionally been broadcast from STV’s Glasgow studios. Instead, The STV Children’s Appeal 2021 will be hosted at Kilmarnock-based performing arts academy CentreStage - a charity with a close, enduring relationship with the Appeal.

CentreStage’s recent move to new headquarters on the site of the former Kilmarnock Academy “wouldn’t have happened” without the support of the STV Children’s Appeal, according to the charity’s founder, Fiona McKenzie.

Friday’s show will see Lorraine meeting some of the many people who benefit from CentreStage’s activities and discovering why it has proven a lifeline for the local community. The show will also feature a rousing live performance from the CentreStage Choir, made up of local people from all backgrounds, circumstances and abilities.

Lorraine Kelly said: “This year’s STV Children’s Appeal show is going to be extra special, as we’re broadcasting direct from one of the amazing charities that the Appeal has supported over the last 10 years.

“Being in the heart of a community that really benefits from the unwavering generosity of the Scottish people year after year makes the show even more authentic, and reminds us all why the work of the Appeal to tackle child poverty continues to be so important 10 years on.”

Musical Theatre International’s, ‘All Together Now’ is a global event that celebrates local theatre and provides the opportunity for theatres around the world to locally produce and perform an exclusive musical revue featuring songs from their beloved musical theatre shows.

The goal is to help the industry kickstart their season after the devastation we all experienced in 2020 due to Covid-19 and to celebrate the return of live theatre. CentreStage Host Ayrshire Business Week Launch 2021.

Now in its 13th Year, Ayrshire Business Week is a prominent spot on the Ayrshire business calendar and this year’s theme is focused on, ‘Re-Connecting Ayrshire’, with a mix of live and virtual events across the week. We were delighted to host the launch event with the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce within our new state of the art CentreStage Theatre to over 60 attendees.

The event provided the opportunity for CentreStage, CEO Paul Mathieson to share the story behind the regeneration of the site and the focus ahead, driven by our values of hope, inclusion, and aspiration. Delegates were also able to enjoy a presentation from the Aerospace Digital Visualisation Suite, (ADVS) project team with a live case study from McCulloch Rail, followed by the opportunity to experience the virtual reality technology first-hand. Tours of CentreStage were also provided to those eager to see the site as the event concluded.

Thanks to Kate Robinson for providing the entertainment in our CAFÉ BAR as morning coffee was served prior to the event commencing.

Please note a change in our opening times next week due to the October break.

CentreStage will be open Monday - Friday from 9am - 5pm with the CAFE BAR open from 10:30am - 4pm. Our café will also be closed on Tuesday for team training and the premises will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Our classes will finish on Saturday 9th October and return Monday 18th for the start of the new term.

*If you have a confirmed room hire with us, it will go ahead as planned.

CentreStage Reach the Final of Scotland’s Champions Awards 2021.

Scotland’s Champions Awards returned this year with a glitzy event held at the DoubleTree Hilton, Glasgow on Saturday 18 ^th September. The event hosted by Jackie Bird celebrated and recognised the positive contribution that businesses and individuals make across their communities in Scotland.

We were delighted to have reached the final three under the ‘Community Project of the Year’ category, sponsored by The National Lottery Community Fund. On behalf of everyone at CentreStage - massive congratulations to the winners on the night, ‘Jean’s Bothy’ who champion a Mental Health and Wellbeing Hub in Helensburgh.

More than 300 guests, including famous faces from sport and showbiz joined in the celebration to salute our heroes. Wrestler Jack Jester, STV newsreader Kelly-Ann Woodland, actor Iain Robertson and the cast of River City were among the stars who attended.

Paul Mathieson, CentreStage CEO comments on the recognition, “At CentreStage, like many charities, we had challenges to overcome these past 18 months and had to adapt quickly when most of our activities were stopped back in March 2020.

As a team we focussed on where we could help most, working alongside privately sectored, furloughed volunteers and grassroots organisations to provide much needed support to our local communities.

We have a fantastic team of staff and volunteers at CentreStage and it is lovely that their achievements have been recognised at the Scotland’s Champions Awards.”

We’re now counting down the days until we open the doors at CentreStage for the first time in over 17 months at our new home, the former Kilmarnock Academy. Who’s excited? We are!

We want next week to be magical and here are a few things to help you get ready to #ComeFindYourself at CentreStage:

T-shirts: Participants under the age of 16 must wear a CentreStage t-shirt whilst attending any of our classes to ensure they are recognisable by our team. You can purchase your CentreStage t-shirt now via our online shop ➡️ | https://www.centrestagemt.org.uk/shop

Ordered t-shirts will be handed out at the end of each class. Until you receive your awesome new CentreStage t-shirt - wear something comfortable.

Getting Here: The main glass entrance can be accessed either from Car Park A off Braeside Street, KA1 3BP or from the stairs off Elmbank Drive, KA1 3AE. Our team members, including Shieldy, will be on hand to welcome you!

Café: Our CentreStage Café Bar will be opening soon and it’s going to be very special. Until then, a small selection of refreshments will be available to purchase from the pop-up Café in ‘Studio 1’, which will be open during class times. If you plan to sit and wait for someone whilst in a class, please use the test and protect QR code to check-in.

Covid-19: Sanitiser stations are available across CentreStage and we would appreciate it if you would wear a face mask moving from area to area. When participating in activities, face masks are not required but please do what is right for you. If you have symptoms of Covid-19, we ask that you do not attend CentreStage and follow relevant guidelines.

We are all very excited to welcome you in and show you our new premises with all the different activities that are on offer.

Our ‘Behind the Magic’ Preview Tours welcome over 200 across the weekend.

We have had such a special weekend at CentreStage welcoming friends old and new to preview the regeneration that has taken place so far at our new home. The hour long tours showcased the accessibility across the site, the new landscaped main entrance, the neighbourhood, studios and theatre, and, with over 200 visitors across the weekend, we have been delighted to receive such positive and useful feedback as we get closer to fully opening.

Eleanor McLaren, Chair at CentreStage was part of the weekend festivities said, “It’s over 120 years since the Academy building first opened its doors to pupils at Elmbank Drive. When it opens again, it will be to welcome the whole community to this iconic Kilmarnock site of which we are proud custodians. The first stage in transforming this beautiful building is well in hand, but we look forward with great anticipation to the further regeneration to follow.”

Our ‘Behind the Magic’ preview tours offer an exclusive access behind the scenes at CentreStage in the remaining weeks of our major refurbishment of the former Kilmarnock Academy. The tours will be running every 15 mins on Saturday 19th June (9am-5pm) and Sunday 20th June (10am-2pm) for groups of up to 6 people.

This is an ideal opportunity to see the transformation of the building, meet the team, ask questions, sign up and learn more about what we do.

Reserve your class at CentreStage and get ready to #ComeFindYourself this Summer

We are so excited to share that you can now reserve your class for our August launch, with the first phase focussing on evening and weekend classes, including Vocal, Dance and Musical Theatre.

Phase 2 classes will be launched in the weeks ahead, including wider evening and daytime CentreStage activities, from Pre- School, Acting and Choral Group to Gie It Laldy, Musical Generations and much more.

Reserving your place is easy! Here’s a step by step guide...

As soon as work onsite is completed, we will let you know via email. We aim for this to happen during the school summer holidays in anticipation of fully opening on August 16th.

It has been so long since we’ve all been together but it’s getting closer day by day. Our performance studios are set up and ready for you to enjoy them and we are looking forward to introducing you very soon to the wonderful team who will be delivering classes when we return .

Team CentreStage take on ‘500 Miles Challenge’ for Kiltwalk 2021

The Kiltwalk is a highlight each year for CentreStage as we descend in Glasgow with our community and team to take on the challenge, enjoy the atmosphere, entertain and raise funds together.

Under the current circumstances we obviously can’t come together again this year but thanks to the Kiltwalk, The Hunter Foundation and partners, ‘Scotland’s Virtual Kiltwalk’ takes place this April and our team are taking on a ‘500 Miles Challenge’ throughout the month with 18 team members completing around 28 miles each… Let the training commence!

This has been such a difficult year for everyone and the Arts has been one of the sectors hardest hit by the COVID pandemic. We know the positive difference it makes for our participants to be part of CentreStage activities but we haven’t been able to deliver a class or performance since March 2020 and know how much they are missed and needed.

Every penny we raise will be topped up by 50% thanks to the generosity of Sir Tom Hunter and The Hunter Foundation. You can follow our journey, kicking off April 1 ^st and also donate via our Kiltwalk page .
